Built in the 1560s by the imperial architect Sinan, this is one of the oldest bathhouses still working in Istanbul. Separate men's and women's sections, open every day.

Our story

The warm room of a complex built for the Sultan's daughter

Mihrimah Sultan was the daughter of Suleiman the Magnificent and Hurrem Sultan. When she commissioned the Edirnekapı complex from Mimar Sinan, the aim was not only a mosque but a centre of daily life: a madrasa, a primary school, a market and a hammam.

Lie down on the heated marble today and you rest under light falling through the same dome for over four hundred and fifty years. Marble, steam and silence still do exactly what they were built to do.

The experience

What happens in a hammam? Four steps

01

Camekân

You receive your peştamal, change in a private cabin and begin to adjust to the heat.

The navel stone

Fifteen to twenty minutes sweating on the heated marble opens your pores.

03

Scrub & foam

The attendant removes dead skin with a kese mitt, then a foam massage with olive-oil soap.

04

Rest

Rinse with cool water, dry off and retreat to the lounge with a glass of tea.

Do I need a reservation?+

No, you can simply walk in. Evenings and weekends are busier, so a quick WhatsApp message shortens your wait.

Do men and women bathe together?+

No. The men's and women's sections are entirely separate, and female attendants serve the women's section.

What should I bring?+

Peştamal, towel and slippers are provided. Bring a bikini or swimsuit if you prefer, plus spare underwear.

How long does it take?+

The Traditional package takes about 60–75 minutes, the Mihrimah Sultan Package 100–120 minutes. Resting afterwards is unlimited.

Can I come with children?+

Yes. Small children may enter with a parent; we recommend short sessions as they are sensitive to the heat.

How do I get there?+

Karagümrük, Fevzipaşa Caddesi No:333 — near the T4 tram line and Edirnekapı buses, about 15 minutes by taxi from Hagia Sophia.
